Jaguar Space, LLC was established by Dr. Luis Zea, whose experience includes working on over two dozen scientific experiments and payloads launched to space via Space Shuttle, SpaceX Dragon, Northrop Grumman Cygnus, the Japanese HTV-II, and Lockheed Martin’s Orion vehicles. As a NASA-funded Principal Investigator, Dr. Zea has led payload and scientific projects aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and the Artemis I mission around the Moon.
With a background in mechanical and aerospace engineering, gravitational biology, and a Ph.D. in bioastronautics, he has had the opportunity of working on space experiments including with bacteria, fungi, mammalian cells, gametes, cancer cells, organoids, and 3D tissues, and developing hardware for their growth and manipulation in microgravity.
Dr. Zea has also served as co-PI and systems engineer for a remote sensing CubeSat and was an Assistant Research Professor in bioastronautics at the University of Colorado Boulder. His expertise spans scientific research, engineering, and project management, enabling him to successfully oversee multi-million dollar programs. He has published three books, including co-editing SpringerNature’s Handbook of Space Pharmaceuticals, and authored over 25 peer-reviewed manuscripts on space science and engineering.
Dr. Zea’s strategic insight into market trends and R&D opportunities in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is informed by his service to the U.S. National Academies of Science, Technology, and Medicine, where he contributed as part of the Steering Committee guiding NASA’s Space Biology and Physical Sciences Decadal Survey for 2023-2032. Previously, he served as a senior business development manager at Sierra Space and has engaged with industry and space agencies to highlight the benefits of microgravity research.
His international experience includes completing part of his Ph.D. at DLR in Germany, working in Brazil funded by the Brazilian Space Agency, and participating in the organizing committee of the Central American Space Congress (CEC), which connects policymakers, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and academics across Latin America. Dr. Zea is a Karman fellow and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate for his contributions to space science and engineering. Leveraging Dr. Zea's diverse technical expertise, Jaguar Space now offers consulting services to government, industry, and academic clients.
